Management as defined by the management professionals is the organization and coordination of activities of an organization in sync with its policies and keeping in mind the desired objectives. Different organization have different goals, different objectives so focus areas vary and there is a continuous challenge in terms of their alignment. But Nature inspite of having hundred subsystems is uniquely aligned.

Similarities

Nature has its own ecosystem, rain, earth, sun … and each is dependant on the other for nature to flourish. Global warming, afforestation…results in disharmony. Likewise management leverages on its own ecosystem like project management, performance management, business management….and disruption of one would inadvertently affect the other.

Nature has its own ways to innovate, evolve and develop capabilities which is organic and natural. Animals / plants shed their skins, change colours, secrete juices as ways and means to protect themselves. Management too discovers newer means of selling, marketing ….to safeguard themselves from competitors.

Tigers / lions/ have their own defined territory. Likewise management also have their business and customer basis and ensure competitors do not poach on this.

Dissimilarities

Nature is a quiet executor of processes. Each process upon completion quietly leads for another process to be initiated and completed. In management the processes are taught and taught. Implementation is a challenge. The basic responsibility of execution is missed. One blame game leads to another. We are yet to evolve into mature units and accept processes naturally. The natural element of unselfish commitment and magnanimity is missing.

Nature has its own way of replenishing resources, whereas management talks about it as an art..only talks mind you. In most companies there is no focus on retention. We only talk about ideal processes in top business schools. But nature is a living example of harmonious and responsible implementation of these processes to a range of varied and ever demanding consumers.
